I had a good conversation with a fellow triathlete and trainer yesterday at the gym- Catiana. She is just so awesome. She pointed out out one thing in her training- she is NEVER injured. I thought about it for a second and realized- yeah, she trains her ass off but how does she stay so healthy---all the time?
The last week or so my body has reminded me- back off Erin you're not made of steel! A couple minor glitches quickly reminded me why last year was so injury-stress-free for me. I stretched RELIGIOUSLY after every run- foam rolled and maintained my core- hip- glut strength on a regular basis.
So this shouldn't be a huge surprise to me when I'm putting together some of the biggest training weeks of my life while trying to increase my intensity- that my body says----"hey! STOP IT!"
Luckily for us, we have an awesome PT Terry Frye (who actually happens to have her office literally next door to my house) who I have gone to see. She also races triathlon- so she understands the whole mentality of not wanting to just "rest."
Although it's been a rough 5 days, I am optimistic that this is a great time to focus on my swimming and bike handling skills (not to mention strengthening all those little tiny muscles). Luckily for a sport that has 3 different disciplines- there is a lot that can be worked on when the impact isn't quite agreeing with the bod.
Even though no one wants to encounter these glitches in training- I think they keep me very honest and in check. There is a reason why there is such a concept of rest and recovery as the fourth discipline of triathlon. The pros wouldn't do it if it wasn't important. I mean, yeah, ideally we would all like to go out and hammer every workout....but where is that time for your body to rebuild all that work that you put in?
Anyway. A thought for Wednesday.
Love, Erin
So true!
ReplyDeleteI look back at 2009 and realize I was so strong---I was doing weights and yoga in addition to my training. Granted I wasn't "going long" yet but I was running marathons, like 3+ in a year without injury.
I think it is these times when we are reminded we need to "get back to the basics." Now, I call it good if I sorta kinda stretch in the shower...when I used to go to 2-3 yoga classes a week.
Guess we all need that reality check.
Hope you bounce back and stay healthy!
So great to meet you!!!!!!!!
